MEKONG DELTA Farmers Diversify
Farmers in the Mekong Delta are now diversifying. Not only do they grow rice, no they also farm tiger prawns. One farmer said:
“We have adopted the practice of shrimp - rice farming for the last three years. We used to cultivate only a one hectare field. The profits we made from it encouraged us to expand this year. Last year my family earned VND 60 million from one hectare, with VND 45 million coming from shrimps. It has helped us to lead a much easier life. Besides buying appliances necessary for a modern family, like TV, fridge, video and even a computer, we can now afford to send our children to high school and university.” *
A step in the right direction, that’s for sure.
